Chaka Khan (birth name Yvette Marie Stevens) was born in Chicago in 1953 and is a singer and songwriter. She was introduced to music at an early age (by her grandmother) and became fan of jazz and R&B. She went on to become the lead singer of funk band Rufus and in 1978, she also embarked on a solo career. Her musical style can be best described as a blend of R&B, jazz, funk, soul, disco, adult contemporary, and gospel. Her debut solo album (Chaka) sold over a million copies and she went on to have a stellar career with 11 more studio albums, 1 live album, 5 compilation albums, and 42 singles. She’s received many accolades including 10 Grammy Awards, 2 Soul Train Awards, and 4 American Music Award nominations. She was inducted into the SoulMusic Hall Of Fame in 2012 and she was ranked at number 17 on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. She’s also been nominated twice as an inductee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of Rufus in 2011 and as a solo artist in 2015).
